Unbound Minds exists for people who have learned to survive systems that were never built with them in mind. Much of what brings people to therapy is not disorder or deficiency, but the accumulated weight of navigating harm, exclusion, and contradiction over time. In this practice, distress is understood as meaningful. It is information about what has been endured and what has been denied. Care here is not about fixing or normalizing what you have endured or survived. It is about making sense together, strengthening agency, and creating space to breathe in a world that often constricts it. Liberation is not treated as an endpoint or a guarantee, but as something we tend through relationship, reflection, and honest attention to context.
Unbound Minds is led by Nyx, a Doctor of Social Work, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Texas State Board approved Supervisor, (LCSW-S). I am a therapist, scholar, supervisor, veteran, partner, parent, and organizer whose work has lived inside community mental health, homelessness services, and systems that routinely ask people to endure what should never be required of them. I do not come to this work as a neutral observer. I come shaped by lived experience, by proximity to institutional harm, and by a long commitment to care that does not look away from context. I understand identity, distress, and healing as relational and socially constructed. Who we are is shaped by race, gender, class, ability, sexuality, history, and the systems we are forced to navigate. This practice is grounded in the belief that accountability and care must travel together. I locate myself in this work not as an authority over others, but as a participant committed to ethical presence, reflexivity, and shared meaning making.
Practice at Unbound Minds is collaborative, consent based, and rooted in respect for agency. I draw from humanistic and relational traditions, trauma informed care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Liberation Informed Practice, Anti-Oppresive Pracrtice, and others, not as scripts to be followed, but as frameworks that support curiosity, choice, and meaning making. Therapy here is not something done to you. It is something we shape together. I attend closely to context. Distress is explored alongside and inside the systems, relationships, and histories that give it form. Pathology is not the starting point. Lived experience is. This work centers reflection, pacing, and honest dialogue, with attention to how power shows up in the room and how it can be handled with care. The goal is not compliance or optimization, but increased capacity to live with integrity, clarity, and connection.
You are not required to arrive certain, ready, or whole. If you are curious whether this space might be right for you, we can begin with a conversation. That conversation is part of the work. There is no pressure to move faster than your capacity allows. Care at Unbound Minds is grounded in relationship and respect. We will talk together about what you are carrying, what you want from this work, and whether it makes sense to continue. Liberation is not promised here. What is offered is a practice of tending, reflection, and shared attention to what matters.
